If you are preparing to invest tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on a vessel, the small cost of having a survey performed may save you thousands more and regret, should you purchase a vessel with underlying issues and potentially worse, safety issues that could cause loss of the vessel or even loss of life.
The surveyor is not responsible nor should ever be asked to prepare a vessel for inspection.
Preparing your boat will save time and additional expense!
If your vessel is being surveyed at the request of a potential buyer or for other reasons, you'll want to present a clean and tidy vessel, and have all documents, safety and miscellaneous gear ready for inspection. If applicable, you will need to make arrangements with a marina to haul the vessel for bottom inspection, and retain a captain for sea trials.
Ensure all cabin areas and lockers are free of clutter and that access to all areas, as much possible is available for inspection. The surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior ceilings, headliners, flooring, etc. in order to gain access to the suspected areas. Any dismantling and re-installation of parts should be performed by qualified personnel and is the responsibility of the person ordering the survey.
If you are having a vessel surveyed, you may be required to have "Written" authorization from the vessel owner to board and/or to remove any part of the vessel.
Yes! Depending on the findings during inspection, issues that arise can be discussed on the spot as to the severity of the issue and the recommend course of action.
ONCE YOU RETAIN THE SURVEYOR, HE OR SHE WORKS ONLY FOR YOU AND REPORTS TO NO ONE ELSE. THE SURVEYOR IS THERE TO PROTECT YOUR INTERESTS!
Factors like type of survey, size of vessel, haul-out/launch, even weather all come into effect. Most surveys can range from 1/2 day to a full day. Surveys are not rushed, no matter the time, ensuring you receive a thorough and complete report.
In most cases, pending any special circumstance, you'll receive the survey report within 3-4 days. We use the Force 5 Surveyor software so you will receive a professional survey report every time. Expedited services are available if needed. If oil analysis is also conducted, the oil analysis report may take an additional day or two.
